Rohna Croker - Notes

  • Keeping it fresh each performance - don't be tired look after yourself interesting things in the day eating well.
  •  Good to have nerves - keeps the spark
  • PBJ - comedy agency
  • Look for agents that represent people that want do to the same style
  • Keeping agent happy - communication, build relationship,
  • Voice over and adverts are good !
  • Be prepared !
  • Cast net & Spotlight are agencies
  • Take any job you can get to earn money
  • Be proactive and get out there as young as possible so you can gain experience
  • Started as a stage manager - good thing to start as because you are able to see what is going on behind the scenes
  • Appreciate the other roles because without all the people behind the scenes the quality would not be good because they make you look good!
  • Learnt many different skills while working on TV - such as rock climbing, shooting, stunts, abseiling
  • Most rewarding feeling - being given a check for doing something you love and are passionate about
  • Not working can affect your confidence, self esteem, have to work harder to keep going. You start to doubt yourself and ask questions such as - why didn't they want me? Did I not look right? Was I too funny? Should I get a hair cut? You over analyse.
  • As an actor you need to be confident and work hard as well as be organised and disciplined - you need these attributes when you are out of work as well as when you are working
  • Working on a TV soap - 5am - 8pm, 52 episodes a year, 12 pages to learn, 16 pages a day.
  • When not working you need to have a backup plan - have to be proactive! Try and stay creative some how - write scripts or work behind the scenes
  • You are only as good as your last programme
  • Even when you are watching TV - Think about the actors, the scenes, the plot in more detail.
  • Use everything that you know and be disciplined - it is in your control
  • Auditioning - no what your job is - don't go in trying to get the job, an actor is supposed to create a compelling and interesting character that serves the text and then they walk away. everything else is out of your control. don't go there to get the job go there to present what you do.

Plays this autumn to check out at the bussey building

1)Endgame

From Samuel Beckett, Presented by Rye Mummers

Ran June 25th- 13th

"Dance first. Think later. It's the natural order.” This is not at all the picture most people have of a Beckett play but in ENDGAME, two characters engage in round after round of
verbal sparring as they prepare for the inevitable. The black humour that emerges is sometimes as frightening as it is funny.

Directed by Chris Haydon and starring Ricci Harnett, Peter Benedict, Fiona Watson and Billy Colvill. Endgame is Beckett's most acclaimed play written in a Theatre of the Absurd style.

2)The Inferno

A Velvet Loop Production

Ran July 16th- 27th 2013

Abandon hope all ye who enter here' are the infamous words carved into the entrance of Dante Alighieri's vision of eternal damnation. In presenting a dark journey through the complex world of catholic dogma, Dante tries to elucidate the very nature of humanity. This is the inspiration for a new theatrical production that will be consuming the CLF arts cafe this July.

This promenade performance will incorporate the full spectrum of senses to immerse the audience in the poetic scenes created by Dante. The audience itself will take the role of Dante and they will be led by Virgil, a narrator who will guide them through hell and, hopefully to spiritual salvation. Each of the nine acts will represent the nine levels of hell. A combination of live action and multimedia will be used to explore both the themes of the original text and what relevance, if any, Dante’s idea of hell has today.

.

3)CITY LOVE

Ran Sep 09 - 28 2013

Lucy and Jim are on their own.
To the rest of the world they seem to be doing OK: they have jobs, friends, ambitions (well sort of).

Until their chance meeting on the number 12 night bus causes them to spiral into a world of love, pain and (mis)communication.

Award-winning writer Simon Vinnicombe takes a funny and unflinching look at how trivial insecurities can send us crashing into self-destruction. Sharp observations transform the mundane into the epic, and Vinnicombe’s slick, witty and agonizingly accurate text will pierce the heart of anyone who has ever been in love.

4)TAKE A DEEP BREATH & BREATHE

A Play by Olivier Award Winning Playwrite Bola Agbaje, Directed by Toby Clarke

Ran Aug 13 - 31 2013

Inspired by the Greek mythology Lysistrata, this honest, humorous and moving new play by Bola Agbaje explores the power struggles, choices and determinations of young men and women wrapped up in a life where rules are made and broken and relationships are tested to their limits.

“Guys think the way to solve problems is by fighting and killing.”

“If all women round here stopped having sex with their mans, they’d start respecting us because we call the shots!”

Routes-

A new play offers a useful corrective to hysterical discussion of immigration, says Dominic Cavendish.

3 out of 5 stars
We don’t want them here. Especially if they’re from the Third World. That seems to be the disillusioned, ugly mood of the moment. And yes, it’s a bit of a liberal-minded cliché, at an hour like this, for the Royal Court to step in with a convenient reminder that migrants are people too but Routes, by Rachel De-lahay, exemplifies how drama can usefully help to stop hysteria in its tracks.

Ritual Slaughter of Gorge Mastromas, Royal Court, review

The first major production of the Royal Court's new artistic director is a punishing dud, says Charles Spencer.

2 out of 5 stars
This is Vicky Featherstone’s first major production as the new artistic director of the Royal Court and I regret to report that it is a punishing dud.
This might seem surprising, coming as it does from Dennis Kelly, who wrote the book for that glorious musical Matilda. But before that sudden leap to success he was the author of a string of dour, cruel plays, including a ghastly modern rewrite of King Lear called The Gods Weep which was one of the least enjoyable nights I have ever spent in a theatre.

·      Characterisation
·      Rehearsal skills
·      Movement/physical skills
·      Different styles of acting (Comedy? Shakespeare? Emotional work?)
·      Confidence in working with text

Out
of 10
Current skills and experience
my current skills are characterisation i feel i can easily put my self in the place of someone else and this is one of my most improved on skill, i also feel my confidence with emotional work helps me because i poor my self and my emotions into the character.
i am on time for rehearsals and focus when needed, and i love giving ideas and suggestions to my group or a director of a peice.
i have experienced working on theatre in theatres in london from smaller community plays to bigger scaled shows.

Areas to improve
but i feel my ares to improve on is my voice projection, and when i do project my voice i tend on over acting which makes the character not believable. and i really need to improve on my sight reading because one i can sight read i will feel that i can ingaige and relate to the character i am playing.
my confidence in text needs to improve as well i feel i lack on my confidence very much with scripts and this is holding me back.
i need to adress this by reading more plays and book watching more theatre all of these things could help me in bettering my sript reading.

Do you have skills or experience in any of the following?

  • Stage design, make-up, directing, script writing, lighting, sound, finance, and digital IT supports, marketing administration?

Out of 10
Current skills and experience
for my work experience i worked in 5 different theatres around london- behind the stage and sences becuase i wanted to know what the people back stage were doing as i performed. so in that week of experiance i learned stage design, direction, lighting, sound, finance and all things teqnical.

Two years ago i went to arts ed and did a film and tv course where i learnt makeup and costume designs also learning about script writting and casting directors, producers and directors.

Skills to develop
my skills to develop would be in the IT supports and marketing administration, skills i would need to be a good market administrator-

Quality #1 – Young, Smart, and Eager to Learn
The most effective marketing administrators I have worked with are in the early stages of their professional career.

I
Quality #2 – Organized and an Aptitude for Details
Marketing experience is actually not as important to me as are excellent organization skills and the ability and enjoyment of sifting through and organizing the details. A couple of the best marketing administrators I’ve worked with came from previous positions in an accounts payable department and clerk in a law firm respectively.

Quality #3 – An Excellent Communicator
By nature, the role of a marketing administrator puts them in the center of a communications network. Both written and verbal communications need to be received and routed accurately from the President/CEO, creative resources, other vendors, and other company staff. The best marketing administrators are good at acting as a conduit without reinterpreting or altering the information. This is much easier said than done, but it helps if you are clear with this person that this is their role. They are not crafting the message, just making sure that it accurately gets to the right people.

Quality #4 – A Self Starter
A powerful marketing program is more like a marathon than a sprint. The role of a marketing administrator is to keep the program plodding along and they must feel comfortable with picking up the ball and running with it when necessary. This might include organizing events, grabbing the CEO/President and “forcing” them to review a proof, reaching out to vendors for more information or to slap them around it they are failing.

Quality #5 – Loyalty and Dependability
If you invest in someone with the qualities I’ve described above, they will inevitably become a very valuable part of your team. They’ll be learning all the time, managing the details, involved in all the communications, and making things happen for your organization. Over time, this person may even evolve into a full-time marketing director, depending on their ability to grasp and manipulate the big picture. Even though you might not be paying them a lot of money to begin with, this is not a position you want to fill every year.

Other skills in the workplace
  • Communication
  • Organisation
  • Team work

 ()
Current skills and examples
i feel i am very good at communicating the way i feel either negative or positive i have no problems in telling someone how i feel and i do like team work although i feel more comfortable when working on my own i always love working with people too:)

Areas to improve
my areas to improve would defiantly be my organisation i am the worst person in the world at organising

  • First-class facilities and resources
  • A student support team

Vocational/University Course- Central School of Speech & Drama

YEAR 1

Freeing and discovering: students work from the uniqueness of self within the group context and the rigour of the training studio, and learn to work with truth and integrity, opening up and releasing the body, voice and imagination, and developing a personal process and craft through which to build character and live truthfully within a fictional world. By learning to live and breathe in the moment, students start to discover the creative potential of the acting space.

YEAR 2

Stretching and growing: building on this experience, students expand their physical and emotional range, developing the art of transformation and working imaginatively from within worlds and characters which are substantially removed from their own. Students also learn to transfer skills to television and radio. Towards the end of the year, students start to think about applying their training within industry contexts.

YEAR 3

Applying the craft: through a series of contrasting public productions and recorded media projects, students apply and develop their craft within simulated professional contexts, while at the same time engaging in the process of interfacing with the industry and learning how to survive as a working actor.

-
Physicality-

Physicality is on of the main aspect in the building of a character. its an has an influence on many of your other parts as a character, proxemix and status . Although it isn't the sole attribute given to a character, it plays a massive part.

Status
Status immediately tells the audience a lot.you can decide your opinion on them quite quickly, As well as giving them a social standing within a scene, it also shows their possible influence or power towards the audience and the people in the play (the other characters.

Voice

An accent gives a character a history (backstory) to the audience and often makes a character more engaging. A pace of language and speech can also tell the audience a lot about a character e.g. a stutter may be associated with a nervous character,

Objective
The Objective in a Scene is what an actors character wants from another character or from the scene. A Super Objective is more of an overall objective that a character works for through a play. Something which is also good to establish is which tactics your character is going to use and when they use them.

Things i need to improve in my acting ability!!!

I have always wanted to be able to sight read and i believe its key for any actor if you are going to an audition or in rehearsals because it makes you seem like a more disciplined actor and its much easier for a casting director to be able to see you as the role and this makes you more likely to be hired again,

also my projection needs to be really improved on i feel i am not loud enough on stage and if i raise my voice i start to slightly over act. and need to also learn about connecting more with someone if i am paired up or joined to a group because i feel i am being taken out of my element.

!!!!!!!!!

-Firstly, you must have great Communication and acting skill.  Getting your name out there as an easy, manageable and pleasant actor is key. You need to present yourself as an actor too. Having good social skills and confidence , articulate. People hang on to first impressions and therefore you need to make a good one.t. Long hours are often involved within the acting industry and staying healthy is very important and sometimes method acting is very useful. Having Strength as an actor will also help to increase your parts you can play.
Punctuality is another skill actors must have for respect if your late for a audition or rehearsal the director is not going to hire you again nor will anyone else. T
what you need to know when your starting in the world of theatre and acting

First impressions count, Reputation within the Film Industry is so important . creating a good relationship with certain people can lead to great future success.

your need to make your contacts knowing the right people can get your life changing roles and they can get your foot in the door. you need to be in the right place at the right time and know all the important people to make sure your can kick start your career.

you need to be yourself!!!!! but they best you, you can be- you always need to be nice polite and genuin, you will not make it at the beginning being the bitch diva!!!!!

Agencies  are also good but the big thing is to create your  own pieces and discover your own individual style Producers are at many events and festivals and therefore these places are perfect to get your small plays investment and on to a big stage.
create a list  Skills that could have an influence on you getting a part over someone else. trates that are positive and saying your weaknesses are something positive e.g- i always have to finish something once i have started.
